• The B7 grade bolts are a heat treated chromium-molybdenum steel. This grade of bolt is commonly used for fastening of medium high temperature service materials. They have a liquid quench range of 50 to 900 degrees Fahrenheit and an air quench range of -40 to 900 degrees Fahrenheit.

• B7M Bolts; The minimum yield and tensile strength requirements are reduced in the B7M grade bolt as opposed to the B7 grade bolt. The hardness is kept at 235 Brinell Maximum. This bolt is often opted for in corrosive environments due to its air quench of -50 to 900 degrees Fahrenheit.

• The SAE marking standard starts with grade 2, indicated by a bolt head with no markings whatsoever. A grade 2 bolt made of low-carbon steel has a tensile strength of 64,000 pounds per square inch

The strongest commercial-quality bolt is grade 8, marked by six raised dashes; its medium-carbon alloy steel has been quenched and tempered to achieve a tensile strength of 150,000 psi.

ASTM Grades
• A widely-used system of bolt strength grades comes from ASTM International, formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials.
ASTM strength grades are indicated by the letter A plus three numerals stamped on the bolt head. Common ASTM grades include A307, which roughly corresponds to SAE Grade 2
ASTM A325 bolt is roughly equivalent in strength to SAE Grade 5 and an A490 bolt is about equivalent in strength to SAE Grade 8.

• Stud bolts conforming to ASTM A320 Grade B8 with nuts to ASTM A194 Grade 8 shall be used for bolt service temperatures from minus 101 to minus 195 deg. C
• Materials for Upper Intermediate Temperature Services:

• General Process: Materials for process and general services shall be ASTM A193 Grade B7 stud bolts with ASTM A194 Grade 2H nuts for service temperatures from minus 20 to plus 450 deg C.
